The Royal Albatross Centre is nestled at the foot of Taiaroa Head, at one with its environment. Start your wildlife adventure - step into the foyer dominated by Poutokomanawa, a carved pole telling the history of the Maori people of the headland. Settle back for an introduction to the Royal Albatross narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Your guide will take you through the bird's fascinating story.
From the Centre, it's a short walk to the Observatory for the privilege of seeing the greatest of all seabirds. Wander through the McMillan Gallery and learn more of the history and wildlife of the area. Enjoy a snack or meal at the Royal Albatross Café and look out for a memento - you'll want to remember the day you met the Royals of Taiaroa!
Experience a tour of the diverse features of Taiaroa Head, an area unique in the world for the variety and richness of the bird and marine life found there, together with its human heritage of settlement and use from the days of Maori fortification to the present.

The ultimate – a 90 minute guided tour telling the story of the Northern Royal Albatross and the People history of Pukekura/Taiaroa Head. From a small Maori camp in the 1300s to a fortified Pa where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840; from a wooden flagstaff to an 1864 lighthouse at the entrance to Otago Harbour; from an 1880s underground fort to a large defence base in WWII. Taiaroa Head is today a Nature Reserve and iconic wildlife attraction.

A 60 minute guided tour telling the story of the Northern Royal Albatross, followed by a short movie by Natural History NZ then a visit to potential viewing areas on Taiaroa Head.

Fort TaiaroaFort Taiaroa

A 30 minute guided tour of underground Fort Taiaroa, built on the headland to counter the potential threat of a Russian invasion in the late 1880s and later used for training and defence during WWI and WWII. See the only fully restored 1889 Armstrong Disappearing Gun in the world in its original position.

Opening Times

We are open from 10.30am every day except Christmas Day. Entry to the Royal Albatross Centre for adults not taking a guided tour is $5.
Children are free. (Entry to the nature reserve itself is only permitted by guided tour.)
The Royal Albatross Centre is open at 10.30am from 23 September to May.  Hours vary during winter. Contact the Centre for details.
Tours commence at 11am daily and run at regular intervals.
