Guided Nature Experiences
Join Nature Guides Otago for small group expert-guided wildlife adventures and let us take you on a journey of discovery!
Peninsula Excursion & Albatross Encounter
Start your peninsula excursion with a scenic drive on the high road to the remote side of the Otago Peninsula with its tidal inlets where, depending on tide and season, a variety of birds can be observed - pied stilt, white faced heron, oyster catcher, spoonbill and arctic waders. Take a walk through regenerating native bush or visit a private peninsula property where we will see conservation in action with the opportunity to contribute to ongoing re-vegetation by planting a native tree. This is followed by picnic lunch at a stunning lookout with the most amazing views of the beaches, cliffs, geological features, and the vast Pacific Ocean (weather permitting). Further along the peninsula, Northern Royal Albatross are breeding in the only mainland breeding colony of any albatross species in the world. This will be another highlight of the day with the option of either a one-hour guided tour of the Taiaroa Head Albatross Colony or a one-hour harbour cruise on the MV Monarch to view these majestic birds in flight.
Duration approx. 6 hours, picnic lunch and admission included
This tour may be booked separately

Sunrise Penguin Walk
A taste of real nature on a truly magic wildlife adventure. Start very early for this 3-4 hour tour with approx. 20 minute drive, a walk down a steep sand dune and a beach walk to our private viewing hide to observe rare Yellow-eyed Penguins on their daily journey to the sea. Penguins share this remote coastal habitat with a variety of different species, the most prominent being New Zealand Fur Seals and Sea Lions. We may encounter both and will certainly be able to see a number of different bird species. Learn about the penguins, their environment, and the management challenges for this unique place so close to a major city.
This tour can only be booked in combination with the Peninsula Excursion & Albatross Encounter!
The tours are suitable for adults only and a good level of fitness is required
Group size for all tours: Minimum 2 people. We prefer to conduct the tours with a maximum of 4 people as this allows for flexibility and the opportunity to tailor to individual requirements.

"Hildegard helped us not to just see the natural wonders of the area but to understand them, not to see just the pieces, but the whole puzzle."
